A bit of Salem history...

The first Bishop of the original Salem Ward, George H.B. Harris was called and set apart by Thomas E. Ricks on November 23, 1884. The Salem Ward was formally organized in February 1885 by the Apostle John Taylor. Bishop Harris served for 15 years. There were 13 Bishops of the original Salem Ward.
On February 11, 1979, Salem Ward became Salem 1st and 2nd Wards. Glade Wasden was called as Bishop of the new Salem 1st Ward and Paul Mortensen was called as Bishop of the new Salem 2nd Ward. In the spring of 1996, Salem 1st split again and the Salem 3rd Ward was organized with Mark Gehmlich serving as Bishop of the 1st Ward and Torrey Bird serving as the new Salem 3rd Ward Bishop.
